Alimony and Alimony Pendente Lite Issues
Serving People in Greentree and Throughout the Pittsburgh Area
Without time to make the transition from married to single life, a divorce can plunge a family into complicated financial demands. For this reason, Pennsylvania courts can order alimony or spousal support payments during the divorce process. At Colaizzi Law Firm, P.C., attorney Robert Colaizzi and our office staff will represent your best interests in navigating this complicated process.
Two Types of Alimony in Pennsylvania
There are two types of spousal support in Pennsylvania:
- Temporary alimony payments while your divorce is in process, which is called alimony pendente lite or APL
- Alimony paid after divorce, which is sometimes called maintenance or rehabilitative alimony and is often times limited
In order for a Pennsylvania court to order alimony, one of the parties must have a financial need and the other must have the ability to pay. Alimony is taxable to the person receiving it and is tax-deductible to the person paying it. Alimony payments can stop if the person receiving it remarries or lives with another person as if they were married.
