Pennsylvania has a two-year waiting period for any divorce that is contested. The waiting period is designed to protect the financial wellbeing of the divorcing couple and any children they might have. To ensure that both spouses have adequate financial support, Pennsylvania also offers temporary alimony (called alimony pendente lite or APL) during the two-year waiting period.
